The stories, moving from the realistic to the nightmarish, are deeply, felt, full of irony and black humor, often experimental in form. The imagery is striking: an architect dreams about a beautiful bridge that “would open and close its arches like alligators making love”; a Mercedes Benz “shines in the dark like a chromium rhinoceros.” One story, “The Sleeping Beauty,” is a collage of letters, announcements, and photo captions that allows chilling conclusions to be drawn from what is not written. The collection includes Ferré’s discussion of “When Women Love Men,” a story about a prostitute and a society lady who unite in order to survive, and one that illustrates the woman writer’s “art of dissembling anger through irony.” In closing, she considers how her experience as a Latin American woman with ties to the United States has brought to her writing a dual cultural perspective.

This work is intended to provide a concise introduction to the spectral theory of Hilbert space operators. With an emphasis on detailed proofs and recent aspects of theory, it can serve as a modern textbook for a first graduate course in the subject. The coverage of topics is thorough, exploring various intricate points and hidden features often left untreated.

The book begins with a primer on Hilbert space theory, summarizing the basics required for the remainder of the book and establishing unified notation and terminology. After this, standard spectral results for (bounded linear) operators on Banach and Hilbert spaces, including the classical partition of the spectrum and spectral properties for specific classes of operators, are discussed. A study of the spectral theorem for normal operators follows, covering both the compact and the general case, and proving both versions of the theorem in full detail. This leads into an investigation of functional calculus for normal operators and Riesz functional calculus, which in turn is followed by Fredholm theory and compact perturbations of the spectrum, where a finer analysis of the spectrum is worked out. Here, further partitions involving the essential spectrum, including the Weyl and Browder spectra, are introduced. The final section of the book deals with Weyl's and Browder's theorems and provides a look at very recent results.

About the Author

Carlos Kubrusly was born in Rio de Janeiro in November 1947. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Warwick in 1976, held postdoctoral visiting research positions at the Universities of Warwick and Bonn, and has been a faculty member of Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro since 1972, where he became a full professor in 1988. Professor Kubrusly has published over 100 scientific articles in international journals and proceedings of international conferences. He has participated in approximately 40 scientific conferences, all with paper presentation, including plenary sections at the Toulouse IFAC Symposium in 1982 and at the Newport Beach SOTA Conference in 1998, and has also been a member of program committees of several international conferences.

Professor Kubrusly was the editor-in-chief of the journal Computational and Applied Mathematics (published by Birkhäuser from 1992 to 1998), and coeditor of the book Semigroups of Operators: Theory and Applications (Optimization Software, Los Angeles, 2002). He is the author of five books: "An Introduction to Models and Decompositions in Operator Theory", "Elements of Operator Theory", and "Hilbert Space Operators", all published by Birkhäuser in 1997, 2001, and 2003, respectively; "Measure Theory" by Academic Press in 2007; and recently, "The Elements of Operator Theory" (2nd enlarged and updated edition of "Elements of Operator Theory") published by Birkhäuser in 2011.

I prefer loose-leaf textbooks because I can put them in my own binder so all of my textbooks match--just an organizational preference. I ordered it used, like I have from Amazon hundreds of times for other novels and textbooks. It is my own fault for not checking the dimensions of this loose-leaf version, but I have never encountered the loose-leaf version being so much smaller than typical loose-leafs. Therefore, I can't put in my binder and the binding the seller sent it in that was made to fit this format was very banged up. That being said, the text itself is just fine.

Easy to read, great definitions, and concise. Everything I'm looking for in a Psychology text book. As a student, I don't want to have to read entire chapters to get the most necessary information before lecture, and this book provides easy to spot definitions and gives great summaries. This textbook actually made me want to read the chapter after lecture (which almost never happens!).

This textbook is one of the easier reads in terms of standard textbook materials.It has up-to-date information, has a large number of both modern and classic examples to make sure that students actually have a grasp on the sometimes complicated material they are reading, reads very easily, has several useful charts and graphics, and doesn't feel dry at all.The writer of this textbook very clearly has the goal of keeping students engaged, and being a student myself, I feel that they succeed with their goal.If you are an instructor looking for a Methods of Research textbook that your students actually won't mind reading, that isn't highly outdated and dry, and that actually engages your students: look no further than this textbook. This is a modern psychology educator's gold mine.

This is actually I really good book. It is written for research consumers instead of research producers. Things are well explained and it is easy to follow. I am a psych major with a focus on ABA and this is one of the best textbooks I have used for my college psychology classes.

Pretty good for the statistic part of Psychology degree. It got a little boring and hard to follow about mid-way, but this is where the heavier statistics part starts. Me and math = love hate relationship. Love to hate, but doing it anyways.

This was one of the easiest textbooks I have ever read through. The concepts are clear and concise, and the chapters are fairly organized with easy to spot headers and satisfactory chart and graph examples; I've never had a problem with them. The author tends to repeat previous information sometimes which is a definite plus for me with the gradual reinforcement. Examples are modern and relevant. I actually kept this book instead of selling it off for future reference in my major.

The text gives plenty of examples, so it is more interesting to read than the average text book, but the material was poorly organized and the key concepts not always well defined. I tend to use textbooks as a reference, not read them from front to back, and was frustrated by the writing and organizational style.

The information and writing is great but the quality of the book is terrible. My binding cracked and my book is in pieces the 4th time I opened it up.

This is a great addition to any skaters library. It's filled with a lot of conditioning techniques specific to the sport that an athlete would benefit from adding to their routine. If you are looking to avoid getting a personal trainer to develop a skating specific routine this would be a good place to start.

It's a very helpful and informational book. Although it is a slightly older version, it is still great for beginners. It goes over all the essential parts of figure skating.

I love everything about this book! It really helps me do better on the ice. I recommend this book to anyone who loves figure skating.

There are a lot of conditioning ideas in this book. The book has been a good supplement to a conditioning class I run and helped to keep the class fresh as we are able to rotate the routines around and not just do the same thing.

Glad to have received this book. Added this to collection of skating books. Worth to have.
